THOUSAND CANDLES
The mysterious Thousand Candles has been described as Australia’s most daring
wine. The vineyard site is located in the southern Yarra Valley and produces only one
wine, made by respected Pinot specialist William Downie.
The dramatic property
plunges from several hundred metres above the Yarra Valley down to the flood plain,
with 91ha planted on the upper slopes. The idea is to capture the essence of place and
season, the character of one farm in one vintage, rather than be guided by or trying to
produce a particular style.
The inaugural 2011 release was an entirely unique blend of
92% Syrah, 6% Pinot Noir and 2% Sauvignon Blanc. The 2012 is 82% Pinot Noir, 16%
Syrah and a touch of Sauvignon Blanc. All lovers of fine wine need to try this incredible
expression that has received much acclaim for its subtlety, texture and seamless
expression of terroir.
